Fond du Lac Band buys building with eyes on casino expansion

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians has purchased an old hotel in hopes of expanding its casino in downtown Duluth, Minnesota.

Chairwoman Karen Diver said the tribe wants to improve the Fond-du-Luth Casino. But plans won't be finalized until a dispute over gaming payments to the city is resolved.

“We want (Fond-du-Luth) to get bigger and better,” Diver told The Duluth News Tribune. “But we aren’t going to go to that expense if we have to hand over a third of our profits to the city.”

Since 1994, the tribe has been handing 19 percent of gross slot machine revenues to the city. The tribe contends the agreement is illegal.
